Earlier in November, I got to interview Pat Brown; lead of the band Sing It Loud (SIL), Ben Peterson (Keyboard) also made a guest appearance. I have to admit I was a bit nervous because this would be my first time actually interviewing an artist that I kind of knew personally. When I met up with Pat at the show, I immediately knew this interview was going to be hilarious. As we were trying to make our way inside the venue, we kept getting mobbed or blocked by fans that were desperately trying to get a picture or autograph. Eventually, we realized that we weren’t getting into the venue so we decided to hold the interview in their van; hence the reason the video is so dark. see videos from the interview here For those of you who have never heard of Sing It Loud, you are missing out. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, SIL consist of Pat Brown (Vocals, Guitar), Nate Flynn (Bass), Ben Peterson (Keys, Vocals), Kieren Smith (Guitar, Vocals), and Chris “Sick Boy” Lee (Drums). SIL began in April 2007 when Keep reading →
“Come see UVa’s own Pompadour and Red Satellites THURSDAY NIGHT– Dec 3rd– at the Tea Bazaar downtown. Doors open at 8:30. Pompadour is a gritty indie rock ala Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire, and Red Satellites is a fabulous glam/indie/rock band straight out of the 70’s. Also appearing is American Tradition out of Richmond. Let us blow your faces off. Come out to hang, listen to good music, and meet some hip youngsters. All while drinking tea, obviously.”
Featuring one of PKG’s own members, Kate Howling, this is a great opportunity to check out some local music and indulge in some Tea Bazaar. In case you don’t know it is a great hookah bar and restaurant with an interesting eclectic setting in the second story of the downtown mall. If you haven’t been yet it is definitely something to check out while in Charlottesville.
Mikey Mike and MC Presto are the rap duo opening for Wale this Friday, December 4th. Click here to hear music from Mikey Mike and Mc Presto.
First off, tell us a little bit about yourselves… where you’re from, what you’re doing now, etc.
Mikey Mike: I’m from Salisbury MD, currently working on music day and night, occasionally attending classes at JMU with the hope of graduating one day.
Presto: I was born in India but grew up in Australia and moved to Northern Virginia around the age of 10. Right now I’m finishing up school as fast as I can so that I can fully dedicate myself to music.
How did you get your start in music?
Mikey Mike: I got a guitar in the 7th grade and fell in love with it. I tried starting bands but at the end of the day, no one was dedicated enough to really make it happen. So besides waiting around for other people, I downloaded some software and started making beats when I was in like 10th grade. I didn’t even listen to much rap music at the time, but the more beats I made, the more I fell in love with rap.
Presto: I’ve been into music as long as I can remember. My Dad used to be the captain of a ship in the merchant navy and one of the crew members was this Filipino Elvis impersonator. I came across the tape and since I was so young I didn’t even realize it wasn’t Elvis. I used to listen to that tape every day and then I started making up my own songs in the shower. I didn’t get into hip hop until I moved to America. I started out breakdancing Keep reading →
This past month I’ve been busy jetting around the east coast attending concerts left and right. I got the opportunity to take photos for the “Cheap Date” tour, which featured Forever The Sickest Kids, The Rocket Summer, Sing It Loud, My Favorite Highway and Down With Webster. If you’ve never heard of these bands you are missing out musically.
The first band Down With Webster (DWW) is a seven man hip-hop band from Canada. I can guarantee you they are worth looking into. This was my first time ever hearing DWW and they blew me away. Their music Keep reading →
Help PKG Concerts pick next semester’s Springfest artist! Past artists include Sarah Bareilles, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and OK GO. For those who haven’t attended in the past this is a huge event in the Spring semester, free for students, and hopefully there will be some exciting new additions this year.
I love soul and funk music, if for no other reason than how it sounds and feels live. Soul is about the stuff that hits you deep. Funk is about rhythm and groove. Go see Sharon Jones if you want to feel it like they did in the 60s.

If you missed the first (sold out) PKG Concert of the year at Old Cabell Hall, all hope is not lost. You can enjoy the music of the night from a live recording while looking at the great photography courtesy of Robbie Oberholzer of R&B Photography. Below are the Intro and first two songs, I Wish I Knew and Preaching Blues. Follow the links to hear the whole set and see an album of photos of the band. Not quite the same as watching their great live show, but a small glimpse at the evening.
